I have an event horse that I feed two cupfuls of soya oil a
day to, I have heard you have to feed additional antioxidants
if you feed a high oil diet what do you recommend?
You are correct the more oil you feed in the diet the more vitamin
E you should supply. In high oil diets, oxidation of fatty acids
can produce tissue damaging free radicals. These are unstable,
dangerous chemicals that cause internal cell damage, particularly
under stress. Antioxidants are chemicals that catch and neutralise
the free radicals before they enter into a cell and damage it.
The greater the stress, the higher the amount of free radicals
and, therefore, the more antioxidants required. Vitamin A, E
and C, together with trace elements such as selenium, act as
natural antioxidants in the body.
I suggest you feed 25 grams a day of EQUIVITE® Vitamin E and
selenium this will provide your horse with an additional 1000
iu of vitamin E and 0.6 mg of bio- available selenium yeast
to control fat oxidation.
